This cemetery is a good example of a regimental cemetery, many of which were made during the early years of the war. It is interesting to note how regiments have their own plots and rows in this cemetery. Started in November 1914 by the 2nd Essex and 2nd Monmouthshire Regiments (Plot 1 Rows A-M), the cemetery was established next to a building known as Essex House. It was also used by 9th Royal Fusiliers and 11th Middlesex Regiment (Plot 1 Row O), 7th Suffolk and 9th Essex (Plot 2), the 6th Buffs (Plot 3) and the 1/7th and 1/8th Worcestershire Regiment (Plot 4 Rows A-C). There were two later burials and these apart; the cemetery was completed by the 11th Queen’s Royal West Surrey and 10th Royal West Kent Regiments in June and July 1916. The cemetery fell into German hands on 10th April 1918 but was re-taken in September 1918.
