COURTRAI (St. Jan) COMMUNAL CEMETERY

St. Jean

West-Vlaanderen

Belgium

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: 28km east of Ieper, the cemetery is located on the main N8 (Meenseweg) Ieper-Kortrijk road. Heading towards Kortrijk, the cemetery can be found immediately next to a railway bridge and KV Kortrijk FC’s stadium. The Commonwealth plot is at the very back of the communal cemetery.

This area was in German hands throughout the majority of the war years, until taken by the Royal Irish Rifles in October 1918. Originally, there were two cemeteries, St. Jean, which survives and La Madeleine cemetery which had just eleven burials, nine of these graves were moved to the plot at St. Jean and the remaining two were re-buried in the east of the cemetery. The cemetery was enlarged after the armistice when burials from plots used by the Germans during the war, were moved into the Commonwealth plot.
