GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Follow the N8 Ieper-Menen road, upon reaching Menen, continue on to Wevelgem, then go left into Lode de Boningestraat and onto the Roeselarestraat, continue for 3.5km to Moorseele. The cemetery can then be found on the Caesar Gezellestraat.

 

Further Information: Parking can be found on the nearby road and access is via a 50m grass path.

 

Moorseele was captured by the 15th Royal Irish Rifles in October 1918, after remaining in enemy hands for the greater part of the war. The Military Cemetery, which is located behind the Convent of the Holy Family, was started in 1915 by German medical units who continued to use it through to its capture in 1918.

 

After the capture of the village, the XIX Corps Burial Officer and the 3rd Australian and 64th Casualty Clearing Station buried their casualties here. Moorseele Churchyard was also used by the Germans until October 1917 and in the North-West corner was approximately 70 German burials and 4 R. F. C Officers and one Canadian soldier, the four officers and one Canadian soldier were later moved into the military cemetery. In 1929, one further grave was moved into this cemetery from Cuerne Churchyard.
