GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Leave Ieper via the Lille Gate, and take the signs for Armentieres (N365), after 900m just before the railway crossing turn right onto Kemmelseweg (N331). Upon reaching the village of Kemmel the N331 continues for a further 4km towards Nieuwkerke. On reaching Nieuwkerke the first right turn leads onto Kemmelstraat and the churchyard is located a further 80m along this road, facing the marketplace.
Nieuwkerke (also known as Neuve-Eglise) was taken by the Germans in April 1918, before being finally retaken on September 2nd 1918 by the 36th (Ulster) Division. The church, which was destroyed during the war, has now been rebuilt. The Churchyard was used by Field Ambulances and fighting units throughout the war.

17042 Private Alfred Michael Mazzei 6th (Pioneer) Bn. South Wales Borderers 27/05/1917, aged 24. Row G. grave 2.
He was killed in Belgium, and the family story is that my Great-Grandfather Thomas Mazzei (17040) (his brother who served with him) buried him, and the army docked his pay because he used his own army blanket to wrap him in!
His brother Louis Mazzei was also killed in the 1914-1918 war, see Menin Gate Memorial
