OOSTENDE NEW COMMUNAL CEMETERY

Oostende

West-Vlaanderen

Belgium

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: The cemetery is located in the town of Oostende on the Stuiverstraat. Travelling towards Brussels on the R31, the Stuiverstraat is a road 500m after the junction with the N33. The Cemetery is 800m along this road on the right.

The town of Oostende was entered by the Germans on the 15th October 1914, it was then heavily bombarded by British ships and allied airmen at frequent intervals from then onwards. On 23rd April and the 10th May it was the scene of a raid by the Dover Patrol in an attempt to block this outlet for German torpedo boats and submarines. The attack in April failed, but the May attack was partially successful. The town was finally entered without opposition by British and Belgian troops on 17th October 1918.

Oostende Old Communal Cemetery was used by the Germans during their occupation, but this cemetery was closed after the armistice, and Commonwealth burials re-interred here. The New Communal Cemetery was made to overlap Oostende German Cemetery, which contains nearly 2000 graves.
