The village of Passchendaele and its surrounding area are linked with every phase of the Great War; the village itself was occupied by the Germans on 20th October 1914. It was not retaken until 6th November 1917, after severe fighting in dreadful weather, when the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade took and passed the village. This battle became known as the second battle of Passchendaele and was the closing chapter in the Third Battle of Ypres.

In April 1918, the British line was withdrawn far back on the road to Ypres, but the village was retaken in September 1918 by Belgian troops. This cemetery was made after the armistice by the concentration of graves from the surrounding battlefields.
