GENERAL DIRECTIONS: This cemetery lies within the town of Ieper itself, it can be found at the top of Rijselsestraat, where the road meets the Rijselpoort (Lille Gate). Just before passing through the Lille Gate turn right onto Kanonweg and the cemetery can be found up the steps on top of the old ramparts. Access and parking are easy. Cars can be safely left on Kanonweg, although the cemetery can also be reached via a 20 minute walk from the Menin Gate around the ramparts.
This cemetery is probably one of the most visually pleasing anywhere on the Western Front, it is situated on top of the old ramparts over what had been dugouts, and it overlooks the moat which runs around the whole of the old city. The cemetery was started in November 1914 by the French; it continued to be used by Commonwealth troops at intervals from February 1915 to April 1918.
