Cheddar Villa was the name given by the army to a farm on the west side of the road from Wieltje-St. Julien, severe fighting took place in this area; and British dead were buried on the spot. This led to the cemetery started here being called Cheddar Villa. The name of the cemetery was changed in 1922 at the request of the Officer Commanding the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders, as 101 out of 148 burials here, are men of that Battalion.

The cemetery was later badly damaged by shellfire, hence the special memorials within the cemetery.
