GENERAL DIRECTIONS: leave Ieper via the Lille Gate, go directly over the crossroads with the Ieper ring road and take the N365 in the direction of Armentieres. Upon reaching the village of Wijtschate the first right turn leads onto Hospicestraat, which leads to the village square. From the square take the Wijtschatestraat and after 500m the cemetery is on the right. Access and parking are easy.
Wytschaete was taken by the Germans in early November 1914 and they held the village until it was recovered by Commonwealth forces on 7th June 1917 during the Battle of Messines, it then fell into enemy hands once more in April 1918, before being finally retaken on 28th September 1918.
Wytschaete Military Cemetery is a good example of a concentration cemetery; it was made after the armistice, when graves from isolated positions and small battlefield cemeteries were brought here. A large proportion of those buried here are unidentified.
