The village of Haverskerque remained in British hands from October 1914 and throughout the war, it did come very close to the front line in April-August 1918 during the German Offensive. The cemetery was started in March 1918 when the 33rd and 54th Casualty Clearing Stations set up here, the cemetery then continued to be used by fighting units during the Battle of the Lys. Graves were also brought here after the armistice and two Portuguese burials were removed.
