Hondschoote Communal Cemetery

Nord, France

Hondscoote (or Hondschoote) is a town in the Department of the Nord, approximately 15 kilometres south-east of Dunkerque. The Communal Cemetery is 200 metres north of the church on the D3, and the Commonwealth War Graves Plot is in the far left hand corner of the cemetery.

There was heavy fighting in the area of Hondschoote during the retreat to Dunkirk, and casualties in the battle were all buried in the communal cemetery. There are now over 50, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, over a quarter are unidentifed and one grave which could not be precisely located, is commemorated by a special memorial inscribed "Buried near this spot".

Number of Identified Casualties: 40
